Is Therapeutic Recreation right for me / my loved one?
Therapeutic Recreation is right for everyone who isn’t living to their fullest because of health barriers. We can support people who are living with stroke, dementia, mental health challenges, bereavement, autism, developmental delay, social isolation, depression, anxiety, physical disability or behavioural issues – or anyone who wants to make a positive change. Therapeutic Recreation helps people who need to:
- Regain a sense of independence
- Enjoy improved strength and balance for falls prevention
- Learn to better manage a health challenge
- Learn how to adapt while continuing to enjoy favourite activities
- Develop new skills and interests
- “Age in place” and avoid moving to a care facility
- Experience relief from anxiety
- Delay cognitive decline
- Increase memory retention and recall
- Feel motivated
- Grow social networks
- Increase fun and contentment
But my situation is difficult and very uncommon!
Every family has its own story and unique set of needs and wishes. We have been helping individuals and families across Southern Ontario since 2003 – and we’ve made a positive difference in even the most unique circumstances. Tell us about your unique situation and we’ll create a program that is right for you.
How will I know what’s been happening during sessions?
An industry-leading feature of our service is our detailed session reporting system called RecTracker. Each session report accounts for how each minute was used and what benefits were realized. These reports are emailed to you within days of the session. They constitute an electronic health record, and can be copied to out-of-town family members so everyone can be kept up to date. If your family member lives in a care facility, with your permission we send copies of the reports to the staff there as well so everyone making decisions about the care of your family member can do so in an informed way.
Do I decide how often you come?
Yes! You choose the frequency of our sessions, when they are scheduled and for how long. Sessions are billed by the hour, with a two-hour minimum and no maximum.
What are the educational requirements and backgrounds of your therapists?
All of our staff have either a university degree or college diploma, specific to the profession of Therapeutic Recreation. These are the only people we hire. They also have previous experience with the population they will be working with, for example dementia or mental health. We conduct reference checks with previous employers and require a negative two-step TB test and vulnerable sector police clearance certificate.
I’m not in the GTA, can you still help me?
Yes! If we’re not already in your city, we are ready to expand to it.
Do you offer your services in multiple languages?
Yes! The number of languages we can offer at any given time varies. Please contact us with your specific language requirements. If we do not have a Recreation Therapist in your area that speaks that language we will ask for a little time and do our best to hire one who does.
Are you insured?
Yes! We are fully insured with commercial general liability and Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) coverage.
Are your billings tax-deductible as a medical expense?
Yes!
Are you Passport program funding-approved?
Yes!
Do you accept VAC Health Identification cards?
Yes!
