FAQs
Do I need a diploma or degree?
Yes, we hire only people who have a diploma or degree in Therapeutic Recreation. Our staff also must have working experience with the population that we are hiring for, such as geriatrics or those with mental health challenges.
What kind of schedule/lifestyle does this suit?
Working with Jackson Therapeutic Recreation (JTR) could be a great fit for you if you:
- Are working full-time but want to add some hours around your current schedule.
- Are part-time in your current position and want to add more hours to your schedule.
- Are finishing a maternity leave and do not wish to return to full-time employment.
- Want the benefits of working from home.
- Like the idea of a flexible schedule.
How many hours per week will I be working?
Your schedule depends on the caseload that you have at any given time. Some clients will be more responsive to interventions in the mornings, some in the evenings. Some may have specific things they wish to do that happen at specific times. So we will match you to clients that suit your schedule. You will take only clients whose needs fit with your own availability, and you can choose to take on clients until your schedule is full. We have staff that work as little as two hours per week and as many as 30-plus. We cannot guarantee how many hours you work, as clients can leave us at any time. We will try to replace those hours as soon as possible but, since we cannot predict when a new client will come in that fits your skills and availability, we can’t promise when that will happen.
Will I always be working 1:1?
All JTR staff work in an exclusively 1:1 setting with their clients. This tends to allow more progress to be made on a larger number of goals in a shorter period of time. What is unique about our 1:1 setting is its “ongoing” nature. We are delivering interventions for as long as the client, their family, or substitute decision-maker want to have us there. Our goals evolve over time to suit progress made or changes in health status. If participation in group activities is appropriate for our programming goals, then we involve the client. Otherwise the client and RT benefit from ongoing, focused 1:1 interventions.
What populations will I work with?
That completely depends on your experience. The profession of Therapeutic Recreation can work with any population, and JTR is able to do the same. We will meet the needs of any client – with any health concern and of any age – by hiring an RT with the appropriate training and experience.
Will I be an employee or a subcontractor?
JTR staff are employees in order to benefit from the full protection of our insurance policies. Standard payroll deductions are made for EI, CPP and income tax.
Is JTR insured?
Yes, JTR is covered by WSIB as well as a CGL (commercial general liability) and E&O (professional malpractice) policy.
What are my responsibilities when it comes to documentation?
You will be required to complete assessments, treatment plans and progress notes. Thanks to our industry-leading online RecTrackerTM system, you will be able to submit your documentation efficiently, in the form of Progress Notes, to your clinical manager for review after every client session. Assessments and treatment plans are updated and maintained as needed.
Will I be able to request the purchase of supplies?
Yes, we purchase supplies specific to each client, and leave them at the client’s location. You can submit a request listing the items to purchase, the costs, why they are needed, and what goals they will help achieve. The client/family/POA will then approve the request. You then make the purchase and submit the receipt to the office for repayment.
Am I compensated for travel?
Yes! A flat rate amount for each session worked is added to your pay to help with the time and cost of commuting.
If you have to use your car during a session, i.e. to take a client somewhere, there is a separate flat rate amount paid to you to compensate for the use of your car.
Do you offer training for R/TRO PPCs and CTRS CEU’s?
All our staff receive complimentary access to an online library of e-courses and resources for Recreation Therapy professionals. The e-courses in the library are recognized for both R/TRO PPCs and CTRS CEUs.
Should I apply even if I am not the right fit for the posted jobs?
Yes, please send us your resume! We always look in our file of resumes before we post for jobs. We like to keep as many resumes on file as possible so new clients can be matched as quickly as possible with qualified therapists.
